About the artist

Hi!

Julia Swanson is a Boston based Salvadoran-American, multidisciplinary artist, multimedia producer and multiple award winning photographer known for creating dynamic visual, written and multimedia work.

It is diversity in all things adds depth to the human experience. Through a combination of different mediums her work reflects her passion for storytelling and her curiosity about the dichotomy of our existence, as we wrestle with societal pressures and struggle to find our identity, fulfillment, and connection in our daily lives.

Always willing to learn, explore and experiment, Julia has a BA in Spanish from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, a Certificate in photography from the New England School of Photography, and a MA in journalism from Northeastern University where she started working with multimedia storytelling most notably on the culture and innovation blog Four Letter Word. She also co-produced, directed, wrote and edited the documentary short “The Green Side of the Fence: Urban Gardening in Boston, and more recently she created and introduced The Art Walk Project (2020) a series of self guided creative micro tours that provide a unique multi-sensory experience and which encourages people to engage with their community by connecting them to public art in different neighborhoods and public spaces.

The strength of her work has been recognized over the years earning her teaching positions and having her work featured in multiple news outlets and publications along with receiving multiple awards that include Honorary IPA’s (between 2014 and 2006) and the Dom Pérignon ‘A Bottle Named Desire’ Photography Competition, for her series of Dom Pérignon Abstracts.  More recently her Art Walk Project has been featured in multiple news outlets including UMass Magazine, The Boston Globe, Museum Open House and Open Studio with Jared Bowen. In 2023 she was the recipient of a Mass Cultural Council Grant and became a regular contributor on GBH’s The Culture Show.
